Basic Tips for Good Dental Hygiene

1. Brush no less often than twice daily. 

 

Brushing your teeth twice everyday eliminates the oral bacteria and acid buildup brought about by the food you eat. Using proper brushing techniques, you will be able to get rid of plaque and debris from your teeth, allowing you to flash a brighter smile. Brushing properly means positioning the bristles of your toothbrush at 45 degrees, going up and down and front and back in a consistent motion. Careful not to brush too vigorously though as you could end up hurting your gums. Make it a point to reach those hard-to-reach teeth, including your tongue and the roof of your mouth for complete, fresh and odor-free results.

 

2. Don't forget to floss. 

 

A lot of people think flossing isn't as important as brushing their teeth, but it is actually just as essential to dental hygiene. Remember that when you eat, food and other debris can get trapped in between your teeth. If you don't floss, that debris can cause cavities. Flossing at least once daily can help keep those unwanted bacteria and cavities away. When flossing, be sure to go all the way to your gums, but again, not too hard to avoid hurting them. 

 

3. Forget tobacco. 

 

If you're a smoker and you're serious about improving your oral health, you're going to have to ditch tobacco. Smoking can cause a whole range of oral problems, from tooth decay to oral cancer. Besides, they are sure to stain your teeth and turn them yellow in no time.

 

4. Watch your diet.

 

Sweet food and drinks can cause cavities and tooth decay because they allow the buildup of plaque.  Coffee and tea also stain your teeth, but milk and other calcium-packed foods and drink help your teeth in building enamel. The calcium and vitamin D in milk make bones stronger, including your teeth. That adds to the beauty of your smile. 5. Visit your dentist regularly.

 

Finally, it's important to have a regular schedule of dental visits to help keep your teeth healthy and strong. Twice a year is generally good, unless there are specific issues that must be addressed. Certainly, you must visit the clinic as soon as possible if you're experiencing any aches and pains on your teeth or gums.
